I The proprietresses of the Trooadero I announce that at the request of a large I number of permanent boarders the roqms I will in future be opened on Sunday. I Mr Q. E. Darton, draughtsmen, Wha a I taupoko, Gisborne, was yesterday nomin I ated as a Candidate for the Waiapu seal .by the following eleolors:—A. Wade, rplumber; F. F. Lowndes, wharf laborer; B. W. H. Ingram, laborer; F. Palmer, tailor. I Three charges against prohibited perI sons—two of procuring liquor, and one with being upon licensed premises I—were dealt with at the Police Gonrt I yesterday morning. Convictions were re- I corded in each ease, eaoh being fined £3 I with costs. I At the. annual meeting of the Union Steam Ship Company a dividend was deolared of 4 peroen*. for the six months endiDg September 30,1905, amounting to £24,000, and making with the interim I dividend 8 per cent, for the year, also a bonne of 2 per cent., absorbing £12,000 out of the insurenoe fond. Messrs. A. W. I Morris and John Boberts, C.M.G., were re-elected directors.
I At the Magistrate’s Court yesterday ' I Jehu Boss and David Bruce were each r I fined ss, with costs 7s, for driving cattle I through the town during prohibited hours I without permission from the Borough I Counoil. The proceedings were taken more as a warning to shipping companies, I the magistrate commenting on the danger ■, ,lof . cattle being landed at a lime'which I ' I necessitated their being driven through I town during prohibited hours. I Hokitika ironmongers, Messrs Johnston I I and Co., have received a circular from I their New York agente which is of general I interest as showing the effeot of the New I I Zealand preferential tariff. The report I I says that the price of wire nails remains 1 unchanged, except on wire nails for New I Zealand, which gives a preferential tariff j I on these to meet the Canadian competition I [ which was entering the market. In spite I of a higher first cost, the price for New Zealand was only reduced as an experi-1 meat by 12 cents on Ootober 12tb. It I I should be observed as a result of the I legislation in New Zealand the foreign 1 manufacturer carries part of the burden, I ■ and New Zealand is thus. supplied at a h lower prioe than any other part of the' world,
