At the Supremo Court yesterday Richard Peard was sentenced to nine months’ im prisonment for indeoontly assaulting a girl under 16.
' Nelson, last night. Mr John Graham has been nominated for Nelson by three male and three female electors. Dunedin, last night. Mr Alexander Lawrenoe Herdman has been nominated for Mount Ida. Nothing having been heard of Mr WH. Ure’s candidature recently it was thought he had retired from the Mount Ida contest, but as bo is now calling a meeting of electors he is evidently still in the field. At the last meeting of tho Borough Council it was decided to demand rent in advanoe of the quarry leased by Lutterill and Scott for a new dcok contract. This was resented, and Lut erill and Scott discharged all Port Chalmers workers employed by them. On Saturday a deputa-
J* iion of the workers waited on Mr Lutterill h and the Mayor, and protested against the £ action of the Council in publioly dun-md-a ing rent in advance, and expres-el sym- ° pathy with Lutt.rill and Scott in the ' position in which they had been placed. 9 Lutterill said as the action of the Council 9 was evidently not approved by the rafca--9 payers or workers, as he thought was the 1 case, the men discharged would resume 3 work on Monday, and would reoeive half 1 wages fop the time lost. Ia the evening a public meeting was held, at which a re--1 solution was passed calling on the Council to expunge from their minutes the motion 1 calling on Lutterill to pay the rent of the quarry in advanoe within 12 hours. The meeting was at times somewhat lively, two of the candidates for Chalmers taking part. The ladies at Port Chalmers collected £36 5s 4d for the hospital extension fund by streat collection. At the annual meeting of tho South Island Poultry, Pigeoo, and Canary Association, Mr A. L. Myers was re elected president and Mr D. Craig secretary, In 1 reply to the application of Nelson for the I championship show it was decided that j there would be no championship show in 1906, To allow of eaoh affiliated club 1 having a championship nine new cbatn- f pionships were created, namely, silver t Wyandottes, white Wyandottes, brown t Leghorns, P, Wyandotte Rocks (A.V.), v Hamburg bantams (A.V.), B.
