Wellington, last night. By tbs Enmara last Sunday and by the San Francisco mail this morning exceptionally heavy Christmas mails for Great Britain were forwarded from Wellington. Thera were 45,293 letters, 16,866 postcards, 10,506 books, 13,233 newspapers, and 1299 registered letters. The newspaper mail by the Kumara weighed about ten tons. Dunedin, last night. The Primate has requested the Premier ; to request Hia Exoellenoy the Governor to , send the following cable to tho Homo Office on behalf of the Anglican Church of the oolony: “ The Anglican Church ia New Zealand earnestly pleads , with the Holy Synod of Russia to denounce the .nassacre of Jews.” : The Charitable Aid Board to-day received a deputation consisting of Dr: t Batchelor and Hookon, who urged the establishment of a maternity borne for the poor and homeless. It was resolved to represent the matter to tho favorable consideration of the new board, this being the last meeting of the present board. Auckland, last night.

A great crowd assembled at the Opera House to-night to listen to a debate on lha no-license question between the Rev. N. A. Davis, representing the New Zea* larimvAllianoe, and Mr Dixon Ward, representing the liquor trade. The usual arguments for and ugainst no-license were stated in a friendly manner, the audience apparently being evenly divided. The points made by the speakers were heartily cheered by their supporters, there being also at times an indication of dissent. .At the oodolusion an attempt by one section to sing "Strike oat the top line ” was drowned by the noise made by the other neollon.
