ttovemoor ow, E The Rev. L. Dawson Thomas, , Gisborne. ; SIR,— i The followlng'statements are reported to have been made by yon at a 1 public meeting held on Friday last, the 3rd November, viz.: 1. “ That a country publioan, with a very Irish name, doing business not a hundred miles from Qisborne, supplied a man with one drink, whioh made him so drunk that his wife had to put him to bed when he reached home. On his insisting that he had only one drink, his wife, not believing him, waited on this publioan and inquired if her husband had but one drink ; the landlord said it was true, he had but one drink, bat he was sorry to say he had given it to him In mistake out of a Maori bottle.” 2. “ A cask was sent by a local publican to a wine and spirit merchant to be re-filled; the merchant, noticing a peouliar smell on taking out the bung, had the oast examined, and found tobacco and bluestone in the vessel. The hotelkeeper, on finding out his error, quickly waited on the merohant, and explained he bad sent the bar*oask, instead of the cellarcask, to be filled.” 3. •• One of the firßt gentlemen he met on his arrival here said to him, * Be oareful about those noxlicense people. Don’t be drawn.* I told him I would sift the whole matter but when I found that gentleman was a hotel* keeper, I took his ad via a with a grain ,of salt." We will deem it a favor if you w,ll give us the names of the hotelkeepers. As great weight naturally is attaohed to the utter* anaes of a gentleman in holy orders,. and as you have emphasised these by declaring that they are Gospel truth, you will realise they bear a heavy imputation against the members of the local trade, who have decided to ap* peal to yon, an eduoated gentleman, to either substantiate the statements or make amends if they are found to be untrue, feel* ing sure that a gentleman holding the position you do will be prepared to do us ÜBtloe if the statements are . without foundation. Yours faithfully,
J. A. HABDING, Chairman Licensed Victuallers’ , J - Association. \ • The Vioarage, Gisborne, Nov. 9th, 1905. J. A. Harding, Esq., Chairman, Lioensed Viotnallera’ Asaooiation. Dear Sir,In reply to yonr oonrteons letter of the 6th lost., I have to state that you have been misinformed as to my words used at the publio meeting referred to. In no instance did I use the word
" local ” in the charges against the liquor trade, and in no instanoe was I referring to looal publicans. In Statement No. 8, I said that the gentleman in question was an hotel owner, but neither in his oaso is the ownership a local one. My remarks on that oooasion were partly a critioism of the advertisement charging the No-lioense advooates with depriving the people of their " luxuries," but expressly to expose to public contempt those charlatans who deliberately adulter* ate liquor, resulting in tbo ruin of the Natives, and also a section of the Europeans. I deem the abovo a sufficient answer to your enquiries, and I may state, in conclusion, that whilst I am the sworn foe of the abuses in the liquor trade particularly, I have not one unkind thought against any of the looal publioans personally. We are lighting a fair battle, I hope ; may the right conquer. 7ours very truly, i L. DAWSON THOMAS.
