Though absolute confirmation is impossible, there is little doubt that the Helga waß the dismasted vessel sighted by the Iquique. The Helga was dismasted in latitude 35 south, longitude 156 east. Her boats were smashed and one of the pumps damaged. Several of the crew were aloft at the time of the dismasting, and had a miraculous escape from falling sails and rigging. The vessel was sailing and drifting for seven days in the storm, and by the free use of oil bags managed to keep afloat. The crew gradually cut away the wreckage, and then, under jury rig, steered for Sydney. They were picked up 24 miles oil the Heads. At one time they, drifted within 40 miles of Lord Howe Island.
