A resolution was carried by the General Asaombly of the Presbyterian Ohuroh this morniDg, 11 That this Assembly places on record its great sorrow for the present terrible calamity in Russia, and encourages all ministers, office-bearers, and the members of the ohnroh to continue in earnest prayer to Almighty God that he might cause these oal&mities to pass, and establish order and righteousness in that land.”
The Presbyterian Assembly nominated the Rev. G. B. Munro, of St. Luke’s, Auckland, as Moderator of the next Assembly. The Sabbath School demonstration tonight was a great success. Five hundred prizes were presented. The winner of the banner was Tinwald sohool (South Canterbury), Hautapu (Auckland) being seoond, and Waikouaiti (Otago) third, The two latter were presented with shields. A woman named Mary Quinn was knooked down by a ear to-night. She was
struck by tho aproa and step and carried c few yards. Her leg was broken, bnt nc further serious efieots are expected. A good deal of interest has been evinced recently in the proposed union between the Hew Zealand Insurance Company (fire and marine) and the New Zealand Aooident Insurance Company. Information has been sought as to the terms upon which it is proposed to oarry out the transaction, so that tho shareholders may | know what ib contemplated. The Herald is authorised to state that the preliminary
coctrack made botween the two companies provides that the New Zealand Insurance Company shall issue to the shareholders of the New Zealand Accident Company 25,000 new shares (paid up to £2 per share) in the older company, and also pay over the sum of £115,000. The enlarged New Zealand Insurance Company will thin consist of 125,000 shares of £lO each, paid up to £2 per share. The shareholders of the New Zealand Aoc'dent Company will I thus reotive one new share in the enlarged company for every four shares in their old company, as well as . their proportion of the cash payment. These details will be reported to a meeting of shareholders to be hsld’onlihe-28th nut for their approval, Christchurch, last night. It is repotted that on Friday last, in the absence o f inmates, Mr G. L. Ruiherford’s house at McDonald's Downs, was broken into, and some plate stolen. - At the Kaiapoi Magistrate’s Court to day, P.
