Bertoaux privately wrote to M« Rouvier intimating that in the interim be would resign thk portfolio of Minister of War unless the situation were made clear, emphasising that 220 Republicans of the Left had deserted the Government, and many were abstaining from divisions on tbe question of concurring in the right of officials to combine, the majority of tbe divisions consisting of Conservatives and Nationalists. i During tho sitting yesterday members, approaching the Government benches, shouted, “ You ’ captives' to the Right 1 ” M. Berteaux instantly left the Chamber in token of resignation. Ho re-entered and sat among his colleagues on the extreme Left. Heated soenes followed. M. Berteaux maintained that his reeSgnation was on tbe ground that his poeitior was humiliating. ' M. Rouvier emphasised his desire tc depend on an exclusive Republican majority. ~ The Chamber, by 310 to 147, adoptini a resolution trusting that Ihe Governmen would carry ont the policy of separatist of Obureh and State, relying solely on Ihi Republican majority.
