METROPOLITAN SHOW
(Per Press Aeflocdatioa-) Christohuroh, last nighl
The Canterbury Agricultural and Pas> toral Association’s metropolitan show opened at the show grounds yesterday morning. As is customary on the opening day, the attendance of the publio was somewhat scanty, aud all tho exhibits had not arrived. The entries this year totalled 1849, as against 3662 last year, details of the entries being a- follows : Competitions 71, sheep 732, cattle 248, horses 544, pigs 77. dogs 16, dairy produce 111, dressed poultry 8, cured and preserved meats 35, seeds 7. Carriages, implements, machinery, special exhibits in teats (including New Zealand manufactures) are not enumerated in the foregoing list. Year by year the entries of implements and various machines have been increasing, but this year the advance is particularly noticeable, especially in tbe department ai oil engines. The display of farm implements and maohinery is equal to the best of former years. A severe thunderstorm set in shortly after 2 o’clock, and the rain oaused considerable damage to some of the exhibits, principally those in tents. , Some of the tonts were blown over by the strong wind. To-day the weather was dull and showery, with a cold south-west wind blowing. The attendance of the publio consequently was not very large. The show of sheep was remarkable for wellconditioned and well-woolled types. The show of draught horses, though not so largo as last year, was ono of the best ever seen in Christohuroh, tbs animals being all first class. The entry of pigs was rather small. There was a very fine show of oattle, particularly yearling bulls. The show will be continued to-morrow.
