Woodville, last night. Mr Jiokell, of Palmerston, has been appointed engineer to supervise the construction of the Woodville gasworks. OwiDg to eleotion day having been fixed for the first day of the Woodville races, the latter have been, postponed for a week, namoly, 13th and 14th December.
Napier, last nighi
The weather was wet to-day for tho holiday. Almost all the gatboriogs arranged for bad‘to be postponed. In consequence a largo number of country visitors were in town.
Mr Tom Waterwortb, borough overseer of works, died yesterday of heart disease. The deceased, who bad held the position of road overseer for the borough for a number of years, and also inspector of fire brigades, was an old resident of Napier, and was at one time president of the Working Men’s Club. He leaves a widow and grown-up family.
Wellington, last night. ' A heavy southerly set in last night, and completely spoiled the holiday. Everything bad to bo put off. There were cold showers all day. There was tho same thing laßt year.
Thames, last night. . John Gregory was found dead in a hut at Neavosville, near tho Thames He was aged about 40 years. No relatives are known, but it is believed his married Bisters reside in Dunedin, from whioh city Gregory comes.
Timaru, last night. Wretohed weather prevailed for the holiday, the rain which set in yesterday still continuing this morning.
Invercargill, last night. Searle Collins, a young man, a native oi Tasmania, was drowned in New Eiver today.
There was splendid weather for the holiday. About four thousand triftrelled outwards by rail.
Oamaru, last night. An old man named Wm. Woodcoek, died suddenly in a railway carriage this morniDg just after ho had entered it. He had probably over-excited himself in reaohiog the station.
The morning was black with a strong, oold wind, but all the outdoor fanotions, with one exception, were oarried through,' Wanganui, last night. The holiday was spoiled by heavy rain, which fell all day. 1 The live stock "entries for the Wanganui Show are a record.
Dunedin, last night. The weather was somewhat threatening this morning for the holiday, but the afternoon turned out fine.
