Dunedin, last night. A house in Leith street, oooupied by Paul Sonderhoff, was gutted by fire last evening. The furniture was insured for £l5O, and tbe house for £BOO, both in the South British.
Isaac Newton Duke, aged 64, at one time a steward in a Onion Company’s steamer, was reoeived into the hospital suffering from ehlorodine poisoning, and died there. Nothing is known at present as to how he oame to take poison. Orange lodges and tho Protestant De» fence Association celebrated the centenary of the discovery of the Gunpowder Plot by marching in procession to Victoria Hall, where the Bey.'Mr Trestrail held a united servioe. The attendance was only moderate.
Ashburton, last night. The proposal to hold a band oontesi here in October, 1906, has been well reoeived, and forty businesses have guaranteed the function against financial loss,
Ohristohurch, last night. Two Chinamen were arrested this morning on a oharge of having opium in their possession for smoking purposes.
A oabdriver named Robert Weir met with an aooident at Biccarton racecourse on Saturday afternoon. His horse took fright at a train and overturned the cab. Weir was thrown off the cab, and his fight leg was broken.
