TRAINING NOTES.

Pen Prasu Association. . Christohureb, last night The morning was beautifully fine. The traoks were; in excellent form. Parifcutu and Douche ran six furlongs on the plough in 1.184, Paritutu easily defeating his companion, which came as a surprise after the poor display of yesterday.- Calibre easily disposed of Golden Knight in a Bix-furlong spin in 1.19 2-5. Achilles and Ghoorka raced over a mile and a quarter on the grass in 2.12. Aohilles, going the better throughout than his companion, finished five lengths to the good. The performance was one of the best gallops of the week. Ghoorka was probably carrying more weight than Aohilles, bo his display too was satisfactory. Chivalry beat Marguerite Qver six furlongs, run in 1,15 3-5. This was a very attractive performance. Mahutonga easily disposed of Veneer in six furlongs on the plough, which was run in 1.18, and may perform better to-morrow than is ‘.generally anticipated. Pas Seal defeated Black Diamond over six furlongs, while Petticoat dashed over half a mile in up ; to-date style in 60 2-5 sec. Convoy and Bean Seaton finished together at the. end of the first six whioh was run in 1.9 4-6 from a standing start. Solution ran five furlongs, the last half mile being covered in 484-sec. Ailsß, Vladimir and Apoliodoris raced" over half a mile, Apoliodoris, who had the best of the start, finishing in front. St. Joe ran four furlongs, whilst Blaok Reynard and Ballarat galloped six on the grass, Black Beynard having his companion well beaten. Ballarat was very disappointing. A majority of the other horses worked did light tasks.

Christchurch, last night. There is every . promise of it being a fine, warm day to-morrow for the open' ing day of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Metropolitan meetiDg. The course is in first-class condition. It is expected to be fairly certain that fourteen horses will start for the New Zealand Cup, which will be six more than last year.

A telegram received from Christchurch last evening stated that Mahutonga was showing great improvement, and is expected to run well in the Cup to-day. •■Early Bird” picks the following .horses for the Cup;—

Quarryman ... 1 : Mahutonga 2 Douche ... ... ... 3 11 Martagon ’’ forwards the following tip for the Oup : Gboorka ... 1 ; Paratutu ... -... ■- 2 .. > Mystifioation ... ... ... 3

THE NEW ZEALAND CUP.

(By “ The Guesser.")

The field for to-day’s New Zealand Oup will probably be one of the strongest in the history of tho raoe. Despite the faot that the bearer of the ‘‘yellow jacket, blaok cap ” is at present a hot favorite, it is quite on the cards that the “ good thing ” may go under, for among the opposition are some very fast horses and proved stayers. Of the fifteen aooeptors at least a dozon have a ohance. - Achilles, the Porirua champion, though steadied .with 9.8, may take a lot of settling, as he is fit just now. His stable mate, Ghoorka, is also showing fine form. Mahutonga is a mystery. Hia early preparation augured well, but of late , seems to have gone off. However, when the last huadred yards are taokled 1 think the big ohestnut will be pretty handy, for he is a proved weight-carrier and one of our best stayers. Quarryman has nndergone a sound preparation, and must be given a good ohauoe. Of Paratutu many cunning ones are whispering, but I rather doubt his ability to win.: Nightfall is a doubtful starter. Mr Watt’s Melodeou seems an in-and-out oustomer, and is evidently a rogue. .He may surprise ue, but bis preparation leads one to think otherwise. Noctuiform is a hot favorite, and if he reproduces his Randwiek form should win easily. Golden Knight haß a few.friends, but I prefer the ebanoes of Veneer, Mystification, St. Joe, and Douoho. To sum up I would take—

. Stead’s selected 1 The Poriroa pair ... ... 2 Mahutonga ... ... ... 3 with Veneer and Douche as likely outsiders.
