MANAWATU SHOW.

'(Per Press Association.) Palmerston North, yesterday. The second day of the Manawatu Show opened rather badly this morning, heavy rain having fallen all night, and it threatened to keep on falling. A obange took place, however, at 7 o’olook, and the weather improved as the day wore on. The Premier arrived from Sonth at noon, and visited the Show. Bo spends a night here and returns to Wellington to-morrow. Crowds are coming in from all parts of the country. Judging started early, but there are so many entries and competition in so keen that the judges made slow progress. The outstanding feature of the Show,

next to the general interest of the stock, is the enthusiastic opinion of sheep-breeders. A pavilion has been oonstruoted to proteot j the sheep from the wet weather. Under this pavilion Linoolns and Downs are penned to-day. The breeders hope other A. and P. Associations throughout the colony will follow Manawatu'e innova* tion in sheltering the sheep. Farther pavilions are lo be erected in the coming year. The ohampionehips so far available are: Thoroughbreds, McDonald and Duncan's Oonqueor, F. Moore’s filly Oriana. Cattle : Slaok Bros.' Ayrshire boll 1, W. Kyle’s Ayrshire cow 1, A. Me- 1 Crea’s Jersey ball and cow 1. Palmerston North, last night. The weather for the aeoond day of the I Manawatu A. and P. Show continued fine to-day. The attendance in the afternoon was between ten . and twelve thon- I sand people) Great interest was taken in the jumping competitions, some very fine displays of horsemanship being given. In the ladies* hunters’ competition Miss Campbell, of FeUding, performed the remarkable feat of piloting to viotory the three plaoad horses, receiving a great ovation.

The Viotoria Gross competition was woo by Trooper H. Beatson, Feilding, and the ladies’ hooter competition by W. J. Bartlett’s Utah, ridden by Wise Campbell, D. G. fiiddiford’s Cinders being second.; The steeplechase competition was won by J» H. McNiven’s Piokpooket, H. J. Cameron’s Senorita being second. The chief awards in horses were as fol* lows : Champion thoroughbred, McDonell Wnd Duncan’s (Wellington) Conqueror, by Medallion, and champion filly, Moore Oreana. Best carriage horse stallion, J. T. Halderson’s ; hackney, Coker’s Emfetor; weight carrying baok, G. L. Sunderland’s Juggler. Harness horses or weight catryiog hacks were both very fine olassea. Draughts were only fair. The first prize in draught stallion waß ■warded to H. MoDooald's Lord Ellerslie. Sheep made an exceptionally fine show, especially the Romney Marsh and Lincoln ■cottons. The judging wa3 not completed ontll lata in the day. The exhibitors included breeders from all parts of the colony. Championships were won as follows: — Lincolns, ram and ewe, Perry Bros. Bomney Marsh, ram, E. Short; owe, Gr. Wheeler. English Leicester, ram, Slack Bros.; ewe, Perry Bros, Border Leicester ram and ewe, Hob! J. D. Ormond. Shropshire Downs, ram* W. Bayner.; ewe, E. 0 Woolfenden. Two pens of Roscommon sheep, recently imported by Messrs J. Davis and J. M. Johnston, of Manawatu, received a lot of attention on account of the immense size of the fleeces. The cattle championships were:— Shorthorns, Mt. Herbert Estate’s boll Clifton-Coronalion was first; the Chamfionshlp for cow going to Mt. Herbert Estate’s Bolinda Daolwss of Derwent 216. Hercfords, bull, Jas. Stuckey’s Ensign, and oow Leonora. Polled Angus, bull, W. J. Beach ; oow, Nelson Bros. In Ayrshire the award of first given ih cows was afterwards altered as follows: Bull, Slack Bros; cow, J. Kyle. Jersey bull and cow, .J, A. Moßae. Halstein Freesean bull, J. Street; cow, Newton King. Dogs for the first lime in Manawatu were shown under the auspices of the New Zealand Kennel Club. A large number of outside breeders competed, The prizes were well distributed. The gate and eland returns for the two /'days amoantad to jQ324 17s 63, being *B3 mors than last year.
