MANAWATU SHOW.

Palmerston North, yesterday. The opening of the three days’ season of the twentieth Metropolitan Show of the Manawatu aod West Coast A. and P. Association took place unostentatiously today in glorions weather, whioh looks pro* mising also for to-morrow. Palmerston accommodation is already taxed to Its utmost. Thora is an unusually large number of people in town four tho first day. Judging began this morning in a few olasaes of horses, in poultry, produoe, art and home industries. This afternoon will be a busy one for the judges, and it will bo heavy to-morrow. The display of machinery, implements, and vehicles today is one of the finest ever aeon in the colony, covering over an aoru of ground. Palmerston North, last night.

« Later. —For a first day the attendance is very large. The maohinery exhibition j a very mueh more comprehensive than on any previous oocaaion, covering altogether 76,000 feet. The entries in all divisions show an upward tendenoy, the aggregate being 8298, as'against 7416 last year. Features of the Show are the oattle, sheep, and horse exhibits, and the equestrian competitions. The last named have assumed a proportion altogether beyond former records. Judging to-day was confined principally to the smaller seotions of the Show, Dr. Harrison (Eltham), J. H. P- Strang (Palmerston North), and Dr. Graham (Wanganui) were the principal prize-takers in the harness horse sections. In a good utility poultry show J. D. Ironmonger and Hitohoook, Wellington, were the priuoipal prize-takers outside loeal exhibitors. Iu judging fine art Mrs Hill (Napier) commented upon the poor specimens of children's needlework, the result evidently of the bad system of instruction in the sohools. There wc,s a good show of pigs of all breeds. Championships were won as follows : Berkshire boar, E. 0. Wolfender; sow, Slaok Bros,; Tamworth boar and sow, J. Jarvis ; Yorkshire boar aod sow,. R- Gray all (Manawatu exhibitors). E. While (Palmerston North) won the points prize. Thß competitions were won as follows : Gentleman rider, G. W. McKenzie (Samson); barebaok rider, H Hassell; tandem driving, Dr. Graham (Wanganui); driving competition, Dr. Graham; lady’s trap and horse, Mrs Harrison (Eltham); maiden hunter (81 entries), P. J. Bartlett (Utah), The weather promises ti oontinne fine.
