SCARCITY OF POTATOES
Per- Press Association,
Wellington, last night. To day’s prices for potatoes in Wellingjon are : New Zealand round 20a per cwt, kidneys 24a, Sydney kidneys 20s to 23a. ! In the oourae of ao interview to-day, Mr Haybtitle, a leading produce salesman, said : “ The question of duty has been raised jn the House lately without much result, and in fhia connection I would like to point ont the eurious anomaly that the ] duty levied is at tbe rate of 20 per oent. ad J va'orem, an! I cone nd that if it is mpanl to be in the interests of the New Zr.a'anJ farmers it misses its object, for whi'e ’ potatoes are plentiful in New Zealand prices are low enough to prevent outside competition , even if unprotected by the tariff change. It isonly when a scarcity exists, and they are practically unobtain- 1 able locally, that it is necessary to import, and it is then that the consumer feels the pinch, for naturally the higher tbe invoice price tbe higher becomes the duty, and the result is that the New Zealaad farmer is not protected, for he possesses no supplies, and the public are pcnalieeS." „ ,
