The result of the Salvation Army selfdenial effort for Auckland division gives a tfttal of £1873. '■ Tho death is announced from Tonga of Mr.W. A. MoGregor, late manager of the McGregor Steamship Company, of Auckland. Deoeased was well known throughout New Zealand, being at . one time an engineer in various steamers. He had been ill for some mouths, and left by the Hauroto for the islands for the benefit of his health. He was a son of the late Captain A. MoGregor, founder of the Northern Steamship Company, and was very papular iu looal shipping eiroles. His age was 45 years.
A Norwegian named Henry Eklund was oharged this morning with having'attempted to bang himself on October 19.' He had been on remand for a week to be medically treated, and he pleaded guilty to the ohorge. His Worship remarked that he oould convict and discharge the accused, but the awkward part of it was that he had threatened to. repeat the rash attempt upon his life. Sub-Inspector Black stated that three months ago Eklund got a rope ready for the declaredjpurpose of hanging himself, and Mrs Allen,, his landlady, took it away. ", I don’t like the responsibility of turning you loose,” remarked the fijagiatrata, who sentenced Eklund to three months' imprisonment without hard labor, telling him to reflect upon tho wrong thing ho had done.
