The question of tnij-nity rule involved

The Government compromised by redaction of the two-thirds majority to tbree-6ftbs, and reducing the percentage of electors required to vote from 50 to 30 p9r cent. An amendment ’to this effect was subsequently carried by 62 to 7. Tbe amendment was accepted by supporters of tbe Bill in the belief that tbe measure was doomed otherwise.

Melbourne, Oct. 26. It is reported that Dr Maxwell, Federal sugar expert, recommends the extension of the period of the bounty on wbito-grown sugar for seven years. Serious oharges against high police officials were made before tbe Police Commission. Mr MoHngh, ex-po.ica inspector, stated that he was greatly hampered in carrying out his duties by tbe Cmef Com miasioner. A cleris in tbe licensing office stated that tbe Cuief Commissioner was part owner of a certain hotel. On on ■ occasion be had to serve a notice on him. Other arega'ions of undue exercise o f influence by the Chief Commissioner were made.
