THE TUATEA.
ARRIVAL OF UNION COMPANY’S NEW STEAMER. The progress being made by Gisborne is evidenced by tho steps taken by the Union Steam Ship Company to provide a new passenger tender, the new boat being the Tnatea, which arrived from Auckland yesterday morning in charge of Captain Hawke. When the steamer Waihi was brought to Gisborne some years ago tho company was thought to have taken a very bold step, but it wau soon found that tbat vessel was none too large, and in recent years there bas been ample evidence of the need of a new boat suoh as the Tuatea, whiob hue been specially designed to suit the work required. A description of tbe vesael'has already been I given in the Tijiks, and it is only necessary to add that she seems in every way fitted for the work. Tbe enterprising Union Company deserves the heartiest public recognition The Tuatea is lioensed to carry 270 passengers, as against the Wuihi's 150; there is I spacious deck, comfortable cabin accommodation aod good provision for cargo, while the engines are powerful, the speed is gcod, and the vessel should be easy to handle. She is encircled with fenders. In rough weather especially tho Tuatea should prove of good service to tho port. The steamer will not.bg put into- commission UDt'l Monday,' The Waihi remains in Gisborne for the present. Captain Neal, the veteran commander, I lakes charge .until the end of the year, I when he retires, and thon Cap'ain Hawke, who in the meautime will be obief ofßoer, assumes command. The chief ongineor is Mr Andetson, late of the . Mokoia, and Mr I MoLennon; late of the Navua, is second I engineer. • I ,
Our hearty congratulations are extended o tbe people of this district on tho new icquisition to the fleet of the port.
