ALLEGED FRAUDS.

(Pep Presa Association.) Auckland, last night.

James Mcllhono was charged with having forged the name of Samuel Lindsay to a telegram on September 21, and also with forging the same name to a reoeipt for a money-order telegram for £lO on the same dato. Lindsay, a jockey, living at the Lower Hutt, stated that in September be attended the Avondale raoes. He was in the habit of sending telegrams to Mr Byerß, of Waitara, in regard to raetng matters, and got accused to write the talegrams in hiß presence. A telegram signed “ Samuel Lindsay ” was produced by the chief detective. It read : “ Wire £lO j important,” aud was direoted to ByersWitness declared that he did not authorise auyoue to send such a telegram, and had never received the money. Since MeIlhone had been arrested witness had received a letter whioh ho believed was in acoused’a hand-writing. It stated that he had appropriated some of the money which came for witness from Byers, but it would bo paid back. As witness did not write well himself, he often got Mcllhone to write his telegrams, which might have numbered 20 at the last Avondale meeting. Accused pleaded not guilty, and was committed for trial.

A town traveller for Heather, Robertson and 00., named William Oldham, was arrested yesterday by Detective Hollis and charged with fraudulently omitting to account for the sum of £2O 10s 6d which he had received on behalf of his employers. Accused was remanded on btil in two sureties of £SO eaoh. Chief Doteotive Marsaok informed the Magistrate that there was a possibility of further oharges being laid against aooused. A young woman named Lily Young was charged with stealing £3O in money and jewellery valued at £46 8s 8d from the dwelling of Margaret McKay on October 14. She was remained oh bail.
