A largely attended meeting of ratepayers passed a resolution calling the attention of the Government to tho very incomplete manner in which the Audit Department carries out its duties of auditing the books of local bodies, and would point out that while no notioe is, taken of outstanding rates, etc., an open door is left for embezzlement which conld easily be oiosed by the Department sending out notioes of snoh outstanding accounts from Wellington, with an intimation that if anything is wrong with the claim oommnnioation j must be held direct with the Audit Department," add not with the local body concerned, the cost to be borne by tbe local body. - ".
