CHALLENGE SHIELDS.
(Special to Times)^ Wellington, last night. • The Minister of Defence ha 3 approved of the Boheme of providing ohallenge shields for volunteer corps in the colony, and Lieut.-Oolonel Webb has been instructed to approaoh the looal authorities in Wellington district, and request their assistance in raising funds for the purpose. It is proposed to purchase ohallenge shields for each of the. following branches of the looal forces: Field artillery, mounted infantry, garrison artillery, and infantry, one shield eaob, the winning unrt of each branch' to have its name insoribed: on and retain the shield of its branch one year. Government will subsidise the money collected.'
