GISBORNE HARMONIC SOCIETY.

" THE ANCIENT MARINER.”

The members of the Gisborne Harmonic Sooiety are to be heartily congratulated upon the success of their initial production, “The Ancient Mariner," given in Sis Majesty’s Theatre last evening before a large and appreciative audience. Exten* sive preparations had been made for the work, the rendering of whieh reflected the utmost oredit upon the conductor, Mr M. L. Foster, who was unremitting in efforts to forward the interests of the society. Mr A. J. Massey was an efficient leader of the orchestra, whilst Mre Parris made an excellent pianute. A special word of praise is also due to Mr W. H. Ohrisp, hon. secretary, for the manner in whioh the duties of that office were dis* charged. The soloists were Mesdames Shierlaw, E. D. Smith, Miss Faubert, and Messrs H. Kane, R. Miteheil, and the Rev. Cba'.terton. The air, " 0 Sleep 1 it is a gentle thing,” was pleasingly rendered by Mrs Shierlaw, who was aooorded a most enthusiastic euoore, as also was Mr W. B. Mitchell for his interpretation of “ The Steerman’s Face” and 11 The Harbor bay." [ Another item oalling for special comment was the duet, "Two voices in the air," by Mesdames Smith and Shierlaw. The Bucoces of )a-t evening’s cantata should encourage the society to give a eecond production at an early date.
