Charters Towers was startled, yeßv-i| terday morning by a terrific oxplosion, j the work of a dynamitard at the| Quoon Cross mine, which wrecked the mill and seriously damaged adjoining property. Portions of the machinery and debris wore hurled 100 yards. People living in the neighborhood ; were almost thrown from their beds by tho force of the explosion. Windows and crockery were brokon | in all directions. There were several narrow oscapoß. The end of a cylinder smashed hrough the wall of tho house of the manager, Mr McLaren, and cut the piano in two. The furniture in McLaren’s and adjoining houses was destroyed. Two watchmen who were sleepit? at the mill miraculously escaped with slight injuries. , The mill was cleaned up at midnight on Saturday, and as there was.no am&h \ gam on the premises the watchmen went to bed. t . The two men who are believed to be the perpetrators of the deed wen aware of this. Tho explosion occurred a couple of hours later. It is supposed that the men placed a case of dynamite between the high and low pressure cylinders, a most vulnerable point. The sound of the explosion waj heard a distance of 17 miles. _ Peopls rushed from their beds in panic.
