THE WAIAPU ELECTION.

MR LISSANI CLAYTON AT WAERENGA-A-HIKA.

The boisterous weather last night did not interfere with Mr Lissant Clayton's fixture at Waetenga-a hika, and the keen interest taken in that gentleman's candidature was shown by the fact that from 50 to 60 people attended the meeting on a night when anyone might fairly have been excused from putting in an appearance. The meeting was presided over by Mr H. Rougher, and the speaker wbs given a very attentive hearing. His address was much on the lines of those given at other centres. In regard to the weather, he said that the electors could depend on his carrying his programme through regard less of the weather. All dates announoed would be adhered to unless anything in the nature of accident intervened. In regard to the Hon. J. Carroll, he spoke in n highly complimentary manner of that gentleman personally. He had no intention, he of attacking that gentleman personally rit.waS his political principles and matters of representation that called forth the criticism. The speaker then gave a trenohant criticism of the Administration. , " A few questions were asked and an* swered satisfactorily. Mr Oolebrook asked what the candidate thought of giving the tenants the freehold at the original valuation. _

Mr Clayton said that' he wa3 in favor of that. It would be no loss to the State provided the tenants paid whatever costs the State had been put to, and one per cent, interest in addition to what they were paying. A vote of thanks was carried with enthusiasm.

Mr Clayton leaves for the Coast tomorrow. and spesks at Tolago Bay on Thursday night. He does not prooeed further along the Coast on this oeoasion, but returns, - and at a later stage, will make a complete tour of the Coast.
