THE MYSTERY DEEPENS

EXPLANATION OP THE TOWING

STORY. (Per Press Association.) Auckland, yesterday. The White Star liner Corinthio arrived last night. Her officers discredit the report that a large steamer was disabled oil the East Oape. The Corinthio passed the lighthouse at 2 n.m. yesterday, in company with a email steamer. This probably led to a supposition that the Corinthio was beiDg towed, though it hardly explains the report made by the scow Haoremai. The schooner Awanui which passed the East Capo at 2 30 cn Thursday afternooD, saw Dothing of the disabled steamer that was reported by the scow Haeremai. Two scows were soeo, one on each aide of the Cape, which were thought to be the Bravo aud Haoremai. The scow supposed to be tbe Hueremas was sheltering under Hick’s Bay, there being then a head wind for vessels trying to cross the Bay of Plenty. The myste.y of tbe steamer is not likely to be solved until the Haeremai has been bespoken at some Northern port. The opinion iu shipping circles is that the captain of the Haeremai would not be likely to make a mistake, but it is possible there has been a misreading of signals. There would no doubt be some good roan son for the soow standing in to the light' j house to signal.
