Per Press Association Thames, last night The steamer Gabion, which went ashore between Thames and Coromandel, has been floated off without having suffered muoh injury. She is uoable to proceed to her destination until the gale abates. Preparations are beiog made for the export from Thames of largo quantities of fciflßber from the Taupo bush district. The work is to be oarried out on an extensive scale. Under the Treaty of Waitangi Maoris are allowed to take shellfish, including oysters, during the close season and from prohibited areas, but are prohibited from bartering the same. It was found tha* some Europeans have arranged with tbi Maoris fora large supply of oysters ftV sale. Aotivity of the Fisheries Department officers prevented the oontinuanoo of the praotioo, and the pakeha offenders will be punished.
