Our Parliament has been on the down-grade for many years past and the Upper House is a deplorable object lesson. Every step that has been taken on the down-grade has to be retraced—sooner or later—unless the colony is to become despised among the nations of the earth and this we do not believe. The task, on the upgrade, will be no easy one. and if it falls to the lot of Mr Massey, we do not envy him his responsibilities. We can, at least, thank him at the present time for giving us a higher ideal, and we trust his phrase “ The Council of the Nation,” will linger in men’s memories. He has “hitched his waggon to a star.”—Wairarapa Times.
