WESTLAND V. BULLER-A DRAW

(Per Prese Association.)

Westport, last night. Tbe first of what is intended to be an annual fixture between representatives of Buller and Westland Rugby Uniona waa played on McPaddon’s paddock, Westport, yesterday, and resulted iu a draw—a penalty goal for Buller, kicked by McNally, and a try scored for Westland by Gillighan. Though the ground was in * very bad state owing to recent heavy rains and a shower falling duriog the progress of the match, the game was of a very fast order from beginning to end. In the first spell Buller scored a penalty goal, and time and again the forwards swejt tbe length of tbe field only to overrun the ball at the critical moment, or to be driven back by the good defence of the Weetland backs. Weetland forwards were heavier than tbe Bullers, but the latter were ffioro clever in their footwork, and were well supported by their backs, except tbe full* back, who was clearly off color. Wiibin a quarter of an hour of time Westland scored its try through a piece of bad, play by the Buller full-back, who appeared to think that the ball was in touch-in- goal. ' Woods in tbe Boiler forward, MoNalley in the backs, and Todd, Wade, and Wilson,to Westland, were particularly prominent.

MACKRELL AND COLLEY v. SKE&T Tbs annual fixture between tbs above firms was played at tbo Domain last Saturday partly in heavy rain. There was a good attendance. The heavy ground favored Mackrell and Colley, who were much heavier than their opponents. In the first spell Skeot scored a splendid try for his side, and in the Beoond half Jries were soored for Mackrell and Colley by Butterwortb, Stewart, and Robinson. The game onded in a victory for Mackrell and Colley by 9 points to 3. The play was mostly confined to the forwards, and as Maokrell and Colley had a decided advan-

tage in weight the West End baoks were kept mainly on the defensive. Both teams made the mistake of attempting back play. For the winners the most conspicuous amongst the forward division were Donkin, Williams, Butterwortb, Kirk and Holdsworth, while Robinson# Foley and Stewart played well amongst the baoks. The former, with a little'more experience should make a good back. The forwards on the losing side all played well, and although considerably lighter than their opponents fought until iho whistle sounded no side. Weka Roderick and Skeet were the mainstays of the baok division, The former shewed exceptionally clever work behind the pack,, and as i stopper of rushes has not met his equal n tho Bay, The game was played in ibe best of feeliog and under certain di»* idvantages, as the goal and touch lines were washed out with the rain. Great interest was taken in the match, the barrack* >ng being very pronounced. Last season this mateb was won by W. 0. Skeet’s employees. Mr W. Gibson was referee. The annual fixture between Common, Shelton and Co. and the oombined mercantile and warehouse teams has been postponed until the 28th.
