At the Magistrate’s Court yesterday Alfred Gibb pleaded guilty to procuring liquor from the Hotel Coronation on September sth during the ourrency of a- prohibition order against him. A fine of lis was imposed, costs 11s, in default Beven days. His Worship remarked tbat defendant was fully aware of the oonsequenoes of purchasing liquor while under prohibition, and bad committed the offence with his eyes open. Fora further offence of being found on licensed premises defendant wai convicted and fined 10s, oosts 7s.

The Magistrate’s Court wbs oocupied for gome time yesterday morning hearing two charges under the Licensing Act. Joseph John MartiD, licensee of the Royal Hctol, waß charged for exposing liquor for sale on the evening of Saturday, September 2nd, and also with obstructing Bcrgeant McKenzie while in the execution of his duty. Mr Stock appeared for the defendant, who p'eaded guilty to both charges. The evidence submitted by the prosecution showed that the defondant, who waß lioensoo of the Royal Hotel in Gisborne, allowed a number of persons to*emain in his hotel until about a quarter to eleven on the evening in quoetion. The police entered the hotel as two or three of the party were leaving, and saw a number of persons in the hall. The bar door was open, and there was a man and two women inside, They saw no one served with liqoor and no empty glasses. The licensee went forward to the bar with the police, and sought to put down the slide, which was half up, against the wishes of be police. For ihe defenoe Mr Stock pointed out that the circumeitooees of the case were exceptional. Defendant wbb captain of tho Kaiti-City football team, who had that day coDoluded tbß match for the championship ogainst the West End team, and on that evening was to be oboeen the representative team to play Hawke’s Bay.
