CALEDONIAN BALL.
VERY SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION.
The Caledonian Society's plain and fancy dress ball was held in His Majesty’s [ Theatre last evening, and proved a great sucoesain all respects. The floor of the Theatte' was perfect; and the general arrangements were carried oat in a highly successful manner. The following com* mittees worked Indefatigably towards tho sucoess of the ball Catering, Messrs Hogg, Nisbet, A. Robertson, and Birrsll; floor, Messrs Sawyer and Webb; reception, Messrs Wright, H. Cameron, and MoKay. - The secretarial dutieß were carried out by Messrs. E* Ij. Maude, J* Buesell, and I. W. Bain, tho latter being untiring in bis efforts to make the function a complete success. Tho dress circle was well patronised, and there were fully 150 couples in the grand march, whioh was stepped to the inspiriting strains of the pibroch. :The majority- of the dancer were infancy costume; a, large numberH.of, members of the Society were, in picturesque national garb, and .the grand maroh from a spectacular point of vantage was very pretty and striking, The pipers were: Messrs Campbell (who has won much kudos as a player in the South Island), Molntyre, Murray (who arrived in Gisborne after an arduous journey from Tiniroto of 17 hours), and W. Robertson, of-Gisborne. A very popuiar .programme of dances. had been arranged, and the musio was in the. capable hands of Miss Moore. Mrs Erskino supplied supper of a high-class order. Messrs W. Webb and A. Sawyer acted as Masters of Peremopies. . Amongst the gentlemen present on the stage were Messrs D. Cameron (president of the society), G. Grant, H, H. Wall, J, A. Harding, E. P. Joyce, and E. Catneroh. The gentlemen's costumes; 1 ranged bptween that of a London street beggar to a Spanish nobleman, and showed in many oases great originality of design. The prize for the best fanoy costume amongst the ladies was by majority jroted to Mrs Bimeon, who appeared as "The Belle of New York.’ - The voting for the best costume amongst. the gentlemen . resulted in a tie between Mr A.Zaobariab,' "East Coast ,Mounted Rifles," V. Sandlant, 11 Spanish Governor," and J, Rode* rick, " Tanner Bros." «; Durmg the evening the Highland reel I was danced by Messrs Mclntyre, Murray, Ferguson, and Robertson, the musio being supplied by Piper Campbell, and Mr Ferguson dauced the Highland fling (by request). :The reol of Tullooh was) also danoed. The result of tho ball greatly exceeded the expectations of the committee, fully £BO being taken in money and tickets at the door, and the sucoess of the function will doubtless induoe the society to make the ball an annual one. Dancing- was carried on with spirit into the wee sms' hours, and tbe dance was regarded by many as tbe most suooeßsful function of the kind held in Gisborne.
