At the Supreme Court to-day the jury disagreed iu the case of assault with intent, aud the case will probably be re-heard to-morrow, though the judge suggested a postponement till next session on account of the nervous condition of the principal witness. A man named Barber, a storeman, was acquitted of stealiDg goods from his employer, but convicted of stealing a ring from a jeweller’s shop when looking j over the goods. He was sentenoed to three months.
Christohuroh, last night, A lad named William Stye was fined 6s at the Police Court to day for torturing a oat at Sydenhem on September sth, Evidence was gived that aconscd had snared the oat in a box and had then speared it with a sharp file. Accused stated that he had speared tbe oat three times, but intended no cruelty. He wonted to kill the I animal and hit on that plan.
Nelson, last night. The Indies’ hockey match, Aorangi (Wellington) v. Wakatu (Nelson), played to day, was won by tho visitors by three goals to two. It was a good game. For Wellington Miss Watson obtained two goals and Miss Simpson one, Tho eleventh annual meeting of tbe Nelson School of Mueio was held to-night. The report was of a highly satisfactory nature and the finances showed an in- I crease of assets.
Wanganui, last night. At the Supremo Court au elderly man named Win. Armstrong was sentenced to six months for indeoeut assault on a boy and Edward Raineß was acquitted on a* charge of bores stealing,
