Mr Seddon may be termed King Bichard, but the News evidently considers Mr Carroll monarch of the North Island, for in a humorous sketch he is represented os having a firm hold on the whole Island, and is made to say 11 Taihoa," meaning probably that in the sweet by-and-bye he may beocme Premier of the whole colony The fortnightly meeting of the Hiber* nian Lodge was held last evening. There was a large attendance, Bro. Walls presiding. Much general business, some of which had been deferred from previous meetings, was transacted. Four hew members werC initiated, and a number were proposed. The quarterly meeting of the Lodge takes plaoe on September 26th, at which a record attendance is expected. Several matters of special importance will be brought forward. at that meeting for disoussion'. The Lodge is steadily increasing in'strength.' A provisional agreement has been concluded, states the London Times, between the Alliance Assurance Company (Limited) and the Westminster Fire Office, under which the Alliance will take over the business of the Westminster, subject to the approval of its members. The Westminster Fire Office has no share
holders, and the business belongs to the members (septennial policyholders). The separate name and entity of the Westminster Fire Office will be preserved.
After the absorption of the Hand-in» Hand by the Commercial Union last year, it was inevitable that tho Westminster—the last of the old" mutual’
fire offices —should also be taken over by one of the great companies; it could hardly have gone to an office with a higher reputation for liberality and soundness than the Alliance Assurance Company. j
