THE NEW BRIDGE.
POLL FOR ROEBUCK ROAD. The Borough Council laafe night unanimously decided on the motion of Cr Sheridan, secondod by Or Miller to take a poll of ratepayers to raise a loan of £5500 for the construction of a bridge across the Tarahern river at Roebuck Road. _ It was nearly midnight when Cr Sheridan’s motion was received, aDd 6ome Councillors.deßired that it be deferred, but Or Sheridan said that it had already been allowed to Btand over font or five times and he pressed for it to be proceeded with that night. , Or Harding : What’s the rating area V Or Sheridan : The whole Borough, Cr Sheridan said he knew a majority of. the Councillors supported him in the matter. . The Mayor : That’s pretty warm. Cr Sheridan ! They voted for it in open meeting. Your Worship also supported it. The Mayor: I have no reoollection of it. Or Sheridan : The minutes don’t lie. The Mayor : I am not saying I did not. Or Sheridan went on to strongly represent the need of a bridge at Roebuok road, and to urge that there should be no more delay in the matter. Cr Miller seconded the motion. Cr Webb : I hope you are in earnest ? Or Miller : I have always been in favor of a bridge at Roebuok road, and I am still in favor of it. Cr Harding : And I have always been
against you over it. The Mayor said it was so near midnight that they had better get on with the payments. Or Sheridan said the resolution had been pushed aside bo often that he was prepared to stay for an hour or two to push it through. . . Or Webb said, the bridge would be at I Boebuok road or nowbero. Or Lysnar considered the ohance of the bridge being favored would be greatly improved by asking for one from ffihataupoko to Haiti at the same time. Or Sheridan said it was the Boebuck I bridge he had in his mind now. It would I be timo enough to support the other when I it came up. S l Or Lysnar: If you go for one at a time I it will fail, but if you go for two the people I will be unanimous. I Or Sheridan: We’ll leave it in the hands lof the people. lam quite sure the Boe» I buck road bridge will be carried.
Or Bright agrood with Or Lyaoar that it would bo wisor to ask for two bridges. Thoy would find it difficult to got pooplo on tho Kniti Bido to vote for a bridgo Qt tho other ond of tho town. Or Whinray ngrood with Or Lysnar, The Mayor: Thoro is not tho sl!ghtoat necessity for another bridgo ovor tho Kaiti, and if you submit tho two to tho ratepayers it will bo lost. Or Lysnar: It is absolutely nooosaary. Tho Mayor: It is absolutely folly to ask pooplo to voto for suoh a thing na tho Kaiti bridgo. Thero is no businoss thoro and fow roaidonts, while tho Boobuok Boad bridgo is well up along tho Borough, end a bridgo is more essential thoro than onywhoro I know of. It was dooidod that tho sito Bhould bo lowor down so that pressure oould bo ro‘ liovod from tho lowor bridgo, but tho ohango of sito is unnecessary now, as tho lowor bridgo has boon widoned. Cr Sheridan : With regard to a seoond Kaiti bridgo it was a luxury, whilo that at lioobuck road was an absoluta. necessity, and at present he was asking for a hoooßsity, and not a luxury. Tho pooplo at tho lowor ond of the Borough already had two bridges, and ho was sure they would not bo bo selfish as to oppose tho one bridge at tho higher end of tho towD. He felt confident that thoy would approve of tho proposal. Tho motion was then pat and carried unanimously.
