Twomey, proprietor of the Temuka Leader,claim for damages based on an article entitled " Soiled Dovob,” whioh appeared in that paper, commenting on recent proceedings in Parliament, is to be heard at Timaru tomorrow. Defendant paid the sum of Is into Court in full settlement and published an apology, whioh, however, was not accepted. Mr Taylor’s action against Twomey for alleged libel in connection with the same artiole is fixed for hearing at Christohuroh in November. The claim is for £IOOO damages in eaoh case.

There was a large attendance at Hie Majesty’s Theatre last evening, when a sacred concert was given, and a fine programme was presented. Mrs P. Barry sang “ The Siul's Awakening" and " Children’s Home ’’; Miss Kirkby sang “ He Wipes the Tear from every Bye ” ; Mr F. Parker sa,.g “ Star of Bethlehem ” and “In the Cathedral ” ; Mr Barlow sang “ Child of Nazareth ” and " Praise the Lord ” ; Mr Dudley Trent Bang “ Ora Pro Nobis ” and “ Nazareth ” ; Mr Alfred Bioo recited ’’The Boad to Heaven ” ; Mr Liohtwark played “ Oavaliero Eustioana.” The orchestra, under Mr Gittos, played " The March in Atbelie.” The accompaniments were played by Miss Mcllhone and Mr Gittos, a Spencer piano being used. Holy Trinity Church was crowded last night, when the Bev. Dawson Thomas conduoted a very impressive memorial service in connection with the death of Dean Hovell. The choir sang Tennyson’s " Crossing tbe Bar." The hymns inoludod “ Now the Laborer’s Task is O’er,” In his sermon the vioar deeply touohed the hearts of the congregation. He alluded to the wave of deep sorrow that had spread throughout the diocese, as in other parts of New Zealand, upon the sad news being dashed forth in the morning papers that the, Dean was dead. He extolled the many good qualities of the Dean, and Bhowed the life’s iesson to be taken therefrom. He mentioned that tbe Dean had peacefully passed away at the residence of the widow of a former vioar of the parish, and that ho was his first and best friend in New Zealand; it was, indeed, due to the Doan that he had come to Gisborne. After the concluding prayer the “ Dead March ” was played, the audience reverently standing. Mr E. N. Sidebottom presided at the organ. At a meeting of the Land Board ai Napier the following matters of special interest to this district were dealt with , The Under-Secretary for Crown Landwrote with reference to sections 18 and 21, block 11., Motu, that the Minister for Lands bad decided that it was undosirable to dispose of thes9 sections, as the tailway to Motu would probably be constructed shortly.—Beceived. Chapman was granted exemption from residence on seotion 9, block XI., Nuhaka North, subject to improvements being complied with. The surrender of section 1, block IX., Hangaroa, by W. S. Ritchie was accepted. The application of F. DeLisle to lease small grazing run, lot 1, No. 44, Waingaromia, was left for the Commissioner to deal with.
