FOOTBALL.
AUSTRALIA WINS BY 3 POINTS. ’(Per Press Association.) Hawera, last night. The Taranaki-Wanganui team played Australia yesterday. There was good weather, and notwithstanding tbe previous rain the ground was sufficiently firm to allow of a fast game. Those accompanying the visiting team say that the Australians played the best gams of the lour, and the result was a victory for them by 18 points to 13.
The better team undoubtedly won. The visitors’ passing was a treat to witness, whilst in the latter stages of the game they instituted a series of dribbling rushes which proved irresistible. In passing, scrum, and footwork the home team were quite outclassed. For the visitors Wiokbam kicked a goal, and M. Smith, B. Smith, MoCleao (2) scored tries, one of which M. Smith converted.
For Taranaki, Ryan and Gnsoott scored tries, and Hardgrave kicked goals from marks and a penalty.
THAMES BEAT AUCKLAND. (Per Press Association.) Thames, last night. The Thames defeated Auokland by 7 points to 6. The game was played under most favorable conditions, but was principally confined to the forwards. Auokland scored two trioß, and Thames a penalty and a potted goal.
WELLINGTON Y. OTAGO-A DRAW
Pec Press Association. Dunedin, last night. The football match Wellington v. Otago, played on the Caledonian Ground, ended in a draw, neither side sooring. Rain fell overnight. The ground was in fair order, starting a trifle greasy, but a driving mist set in, and continued during the play, rendering the ground and ball greasy. Playing with a good breeze in tho first spell, Wellington were attacking most of the time, but the defence was solid, and they were unable to score. Tho defenoe took bo much out of the looal moo that they were hot equal to putting up n score in the seoond. The visiting forwards frequently burst through, and made a good deal of ground, to be driven back by a kick. The game was only interesting because something was expected to happen, at any moment, but it never happened. As a display of interprovincial football it
was poor, neither side having the ability to score. The Wellington forwards were decidedly the best, bat the backs were poor, except at fielding and kicking.
