It is believed that agents already appointed by the Powers will proceed to* Macedonia to settle preliminaries. Tho Powers hope that their presence will convince the Porte of the uselessness of resisting.
Paris, Sopt 4. Owing to failure of the sardine fishing, the population of Brittany is on the verge of famine.
Melbourne, Sopt. 5. Tho Pacific cable balance-sheet for the year ended March 31 shows the earnings were £8747, an increase on those of the previous year. The surplus overworking expenses is £36,695, but with sums set apart for interest, renewal and sinking funds the year closed with a deficit of £75,849, whereon New Zealand’s share is £8428. A forecast for the year shows expected revenue of £82,00(1, disbursements £168,000, leaving an estimated deficit of £86,000. Obituary : Frank Hanna, sporting editor of the Herald. Brjsbane, Sept 5. A lunatic at Willowburn Asylum killed another by a blow with a broomstick.
