PREMIER’S STATEMENT.

(Per Press Association.) Wellington, last night. A deputation waited oh the Premier yesterday to urge that steps be taken to utilise the streams in the .vicinity of Shannon and Foxton to generate electricity for eleotric lighting ana productive works in the Manawatu district. Incidentally it was mentioned that there were 86 fl&xmills between Shannon and Foxton, each of which spent about £SOO yearly for fuel. These could be driven by electricity for half of that amount, whioh would yield £BOOO towards the cost of the sohemo. Owing to intense competition it was necessary to run fiaxmills as cheaply as possible; therefore tho Government were urged to push forward the soheme in the interests of the industry.. The Premier replied that £50,000 was to be set apart for promoting eleotrieal energy, and a-Beparate amount would db set apart for each provincial distriot where industries were carried on, and where lighting was required, He would urge the Minister for Public Works to send an expert to the Manawatu to report on the streams mentioned. He recognised that the flax industry needed, and deserved, all possibly assistance. .
