ADVANCE IN FREIGHTS.
Writing under date of August 4, Messrs Mailler and Quereau, of New York, report that tho U.S. and A. line have had the s.s. Gape Breton loading for Melbourne, Sydney, and New Zealand ports, and she was about ready to sail. The Tyaer line advertised the s.s. Marere for Melbourne, Sydney, and New Zealand ports, with dispatch about August 25th, but it is understood this steamer is likely to be delayed until September. Freight rates have been advanced to 20s per ton measurement and 17s fid per ton weight to Australian ports and 25s per ton measurement and 20s per ton weight to New Zealand ports. As these rates only cover about oharter oost it is thought quite probable that there will be further advances in tbe near future. In sailing vessels there have been no dispatches, but there are two barques loading for Australia. Freight rates by sail have not as yet been ohanged, but are expeoted to advance eoon.
Messrs Strong, Trowbridge and Co., referring to the advance in freights, stats that tbe outlook at present for steamers later than September is that rates will probably go higher than at present, and will be back to tariff rates in tho course of two or three months. Their report continues that the Tyser Co. propose despatching the s.s. Marere on September 13th for Melbourne, Sydney, Auckland,Wellington Lyttelton, and Port Chßlmere, and the s.s! Star of England for the same ports on October Ist. The A. and A. steamer Cape Breton was to have sailed for these ports on August 12. Messrs Birt, Potter and Hughes, Ltd., advertise the s.s. Devon for tbe principal Australian and New Zealand ports, with deßpatoh about August 25.—Star. °
