Dr. Solf, Governor of Samoa, on August 14 addressed a large assembly of the ohiefs and officials at Mulinuu, tho scene of the disturbance in April last, when several native chiefs were liberated from gaol. Tho captain and officers of the warship Condor were also present. Dr. Solf dispersed the Taimua and Faipule, who were his native councillors, and oreated a new Council, He said the deposed chiefs and officials took advantage of his absence and followed the advioe of people who had no I love for Samoa. They imposed taxes without authority, and went so far as to I oommit an aot of violence. He found no where in Samoa was there any sympathy with the wrongdoers. A decision regard- I ing Mataafa had not yet been made clear from Berlin. Regarding other offenders, I tho ringleaders, Moefaano and Lanati, J would be deported, and others fined and I dismissed. He added that be wanted it
made perfectly clear that there was no difference between the Government for Samoa and the general government of a oolony. There was only one Government in Samoa, that of the German Emperor, There was no room in the Government for Tumua and Pule.
