AUCKLAND DEFEATS WELLINGTON FOE KANFURLY SHIELD. '(Per Press Association.) Wellington, lasi night, Wellington managed to lose the Ranfurly Shield to Aiokland yesterday by 10 to 6. They were playing a team drawn from the looal Union only, and sadly missed their oonntry brethren behind the sorimmage. The rearguard was pitifully weak, and their exhibition eont cold Bhivers down the baoks of the spectators. The forwards wore nearly the same es those who have done so well in recent matches, but they had all their work out out to beep the Auokland forwards in cheok, and what they won their baoks carefully lost. In the first spell, Auokland, playing with the wind, soored a try and a goal from a mark. The former was effected; by Todd and Wynyard, and the latter by Francis. Playing with the wind, Wellington did worse than before, for though they scored six points from penalty goals, Tyler crossed their lino again, making Auokland 10 to 6, and generally the looat 'men were outplayed by the visitors. The latter’s baoks were a good lot, and their safe<y and 1 I smartness offered a sharp contrast to the fambling and indeoision of Wellington’s rear men. The forwards also played, with dash and combination, and more than held their : own against the Btrong vanguard'”*'* opposed to them. The day, which had been showery and threatening, cleared up. The sun oame out, and some 6000 spectators were present. . ,
