COOK MEMORIAL.
{To the Edftoß Gisborne Timeß.J Sir, —Having assisted with my small quota to raise the £SOO which has been collected for tho Cook Monument, and which, with the Government subsidy, now amounts to £IOOO,I beg leave to offer a snggestion regarding the proposed site which tho committee have agreed is unsuitable. Captain Tucker, who. with his usual generosity, ha 3 kindly offered an acre on the slope of Haiti Hill (opposite to whore the great navigator landed) for the purpose of erecting the monument, and no doubt he will adhere to his offer if that acre is transformed into a Cook Park, nicoly fonced ahd planted with native trees, and having a brass tablet on the gate bearing the following insoription: “ This Park marks the spot where Captain James Cook landed when he visited Poverty Bay in tho year 1769,” and whoso monument now stands near the Turanganui bridge, Supreme Court yard, or any other town spot that may ba decided on. Tho majority of local, subscribers are against plaoing the memorial on Haiti Hill, or in that vicinity, while the outside subscribers care naught whether the monument is placed on Young Hick’s Head, or at the end of the breakwater. Another argument in favor of the town site is that visitors to Gisborne would not havo an opportunity of viewing it, unless seen from -the steamer in the bay, and then there is a probability of mistaking the Gisborne Freezing Company’ great smokestack for it. Therefore, I would ask the committee to reoonsider the advisability of plaoing tho monument around on tho Haiti. Trusting the committee will give this letter tho consideration whioh no doubt it deserves, or call a public meeting, —Yours faithfully, HERBEKT H. DE COSTA.
