The distriot court oommencod its sitting to-day, before Judge Hazelden. The court was oocupied all day in hearing a oharge against Ivanhoe Stephen Shaw, of having committed an unlawful assault upon a girl under 16 years of age at Park Vale on May 10. After hearing the evidence tho accused was acquittod. Dunedin, last night. Passengers by Thursday night’s second express from Christchurch wore Btartled by the breaking of a window in each of the two oarriages. In the bird oage oarriage a man and his wife were travelling to Invercargill. When Dear Goodwood tboy were startled by the window glass being partly shattered and falling into the car, Almost at the same moment tho occupants of tho first-class smoker had the same experience. The dining oar waß between the smoker and the bird cage. As no bullet could be found in the car, it is presumed the missle which shattered tho glass was from a catapult. Tho holes made wore from an inch ?o 11 inches in diameter. The police are making enquiries.
