AFTERNOON SITTING.
(Per Presa Association.) Wellington, last night. The Council met at 2.30. Tho Criminal Code Amendment Bill and the Mutual Fire Insuranoe Bill passed the final stages. The Maori Land Councils Bill passed through committee. The House mot at 2.30. The Workers’ Dwellings Bill was introduced by Governor’s message. (The House went into Committee of Supply for further consideration of the Estimates, the Justiee Department vote being taken first, and a lengthy discussion took place on the status and salaries of magistrates. evening, Fitting. The House resumed at 7.30.
The quostion of the Btatus and salaries and tenure of magistrates was disoussed until nearly midnight. A motion by Mr Massey to reduce the total vote by £1 as an indication that the tenure of office of magistrates Bhould be placed on a more satisfactory footing was lost by 34 to 27. Mr 3eddon said no good cause had been shown for change in the existing condition of things, and magistrates felt themselves quite independent.
