The House resumed at 7.30.

The quostion of the Btatus and salaries and tenure of magistrates was disoussed until nearly midnight. A motion by Mr Massey to reduce the total vote by £1 as an indication that the tenure of office of magistrates Bhould be placed on a more satisfactory footing was lost by 34 to 27. Mr 3eddon said no good cause had been shown for change in the existing condition of things, and magistrates felt themselves quite independent.
