FATAL ACCIDENT.

Front his position whon found, kowovor, it seomod ns if ho wo« putting a bolt on tho abaft, and was caught by his loose jnokot, and a piooo of ropo that was hanging on tho bolt. , , , Ho was apparently wbirlod round tho ! sfiaft, his foot striking a beam of wood nbovo and tho floor bolow. Owing to tho noise made by tho stampers, his ortos, ovon if ho oallod out, oould not have boon hoard. , Ho was disoovorod by a man who workod in another part of tho battery, and who, on sooing tho position of Mr Gotland, hod tho ongino stopped and Mr Gotland removed from tho Bhaft. Tho man was nearly dead thou, and ho gave a groan and expired, Dr Smith/and tho police wore sent for from Paoroa, and both arrived promptly, but tho dootor could only pronounce life oxtinot. Mr Gotland’s foot woro terribly cruohod and battered, and ho hod also a number of bruises on his body. His head, however, was not knookod about very much. The cause of death was apparently suffooation, caused by fho rush of blood to tho head. 1 . Dsoeased, who had only been in Komata a few weeks, oamo from Coromandel, where he is very well known. Ho leaves a wife and five obildren, the eldest of whom is about oight years of ago. Coromandel, Monday.
News of the accidental death of Mr Vincent Oakland at Ko.mata. this morning oaused quite a sensation in Coromandel. Dooeasod was about 87 years of ago, and only recently left Coromandel for Komata. He was the eldest son of tbo late Captain Gatland, for many years Clerk of the Court here, aod nephew of the late Sir Alfred Cadman. He was a Post Master of the local Masouio lodge, and a promiuent Odd' fellow. He was held in high esteem. The family ace one of tho oldest and most respeoted in tho Coromandel district, and profound sympathy is felt for the relatives in thoir beroavoment.
