A DEPUTATION.
MAYOR OF AUCKLAND RESENTS WHAT HE DEEMS AN INSULT.
(Per Press Association.) Auckland, last night.
At a meeting of the City Council to-night h large deputation waited on the Conncil to request that placards setting out the evils of drink, similar to the placards issued by the Government of Franoe and municipality of Woolwich, should be issued by the Council. The deputationists said they were not there in the interests of prohibition or any temperance party, but simply as citizens anxious to cheek one of tbe causes of race deterioration.
1 Tbe Mayor (Mr A. M. Myers), after thanking tbe deputation, said he considered their request was a gratuitous insult to him personally. The members of the deputation knew he was a member of tbe firm of Campbell, Ehrenfried and Co., tbe well known brewers, and apparently they desired to place him in a difficult position. However, he would advise councillors to have nothiog to dc with ethics, end moved a resolution declining tho request of the deputation. Tho resolution was carried unanimously.
The Rev. Mr Garland said he regretted that the Mayor had taken the action of the deputation persopally. There was no intention whatever of raising any difficulty for him in the matter.
