BEAUTIFYING ASSOCIATION.
ANNUAL MEETING.
The adjourned annual meeting of the Gisborne Beautifying Association was held in the Borough Couuoil Chambers at five o’olook yesterday afternoon. There were upwards of thirty members present. Mr G. Grant, President, oooupied the obair. The annual report was .road by Mr G. Darton, secretary, and was as follows “In submitting the annual report and
balanoe sheet your oommittee oonsider that the members are to be congratulated
on a successful year's work. When the Association started five years ago tho programme included the beautifying of Bead’s Quay from Kaiti Bridge to Whataupoko Bridge. The task at first seemed to many far beyond the efforts of the Association, and even the members themselves had grave doubts of their ability to complote the work. However, by plodding along tboy have now euooeeded in completing the work, ana when the terraoe and fiat are sown down in grass and planted in shrubs it will be a credit to the Association and an ornament to the Borough for all time. The foundation of the banu rotunda is completed and the ironwork is expected to arrive any day. Its erection should be completed with a month. . The completion of the works at the point will permit of the I Association devoting its energies in other directions.
“ The balanoe sheet shows that the receipts from all sources amounted to £174 12s 3d, and the expenditure was £l7B 7s, leaving a credit balanoe of £1 5s 3d.” The report and balanoe sheet were adopted on the motion of the President, eeoonded by Dr Williams. The offioers for the ensuing year were elooted as follows President, Mr G. Grant (re-eleoted); vice-presidents, Messrs A. H. Wallis and Mander; committee, Drs Williams and Buckeridgo, Messrs A. Dewing, A. F. Kennedy, W. Miller, P. T. Kenway, 0. Adair, J. R. Bedstone, G. Bull, W. Paltridge, A. B. Muir, and W. Petfcio ; seoretary, Mr G. Dai-ton (re-eleoted); auditor, W. L. Symes (re-elected.) i The Chairman said they hoped to have the Point sown in grass by the spring. When they had completed that work they would bo able to turn their attention to other parts of the town. They were not tied down to any particular locality. Captain - Tncker suggested that the Association might find ample scope for their energies on the Waikanae foreshore. The owners of, land abutting the beaoh had given a strip of land a chain in width to the borough on the condition that that body formed and maintained a roadway. He was sorry to say that the Borough Council had totally neglected this work, and in consequence the owners were making representations to the Borough Council that evening to retract the gift, so that they could do the work themselves. He considered a line of fascines would answer the purpose of a wall, and the people could be permitted to deposit rubbish Of certain kinds behind the breastwork, which in time would become covered with sand. They should ereot an esplanade on the Waikanae on similar lines to that at Napier. He thought the Beautifying Association should take this matter into consideration, and not allow the foreshore to be washed away. Mr A. F. Kennedy said it was for the pnblio bodies to construct aDd maintain such a work. It was not within the Association’s province, which was planting and beautifying. They could make a recommendation to the Council to have the foreshore protected. Captain Tucker Baid that was what he asked.
Continuing, Mr Kennedy said be congratulated their president (Mr Grant) and their secretary (Mr Darton) on the splendid work they bad accomplished at the Point, They had transformed a dirty part of the t,own, where some years ago tho people had refused to plaoe a band rotunda beoause of its ugliness, into @ .beauty spot. He would like to see the Association turn its attention to the opposite bank, and complete the work of improvement as far as Harris’creek, Kaiti. They had started this work some time ago, and had not sufficient funds to domplete the work. He tbbugbjt they should confine themselves to worjT that had been plaoed in their hands and which lends itseff to tjie sgope of the Association. It was decided, on the motion of Captain Tucker, that tbe following resolution be forwarded to the Borough Council 11 That this Association respectfully draws the attention of the Borough Council to tbe fact that the Waikanae feroshore is being washed away, and tbe Association hopes that tbe Council will take the steps that are necessary to prevent any further erosion.” The meeting of the committee was fixed for Monday next, at 5 p.m.
