UNEASINESS AS TO AMERICAN INSURANCE COMPANY.

Mr Deakin, in reply to a question, said that inquiries would be made with the view of protecting the interests of those assured in connection with one of the large American insurance companies which, it had been stated, contemplated withdrawine from Australia. The Commonwealth had no power to deal with insurance until it
legislated on the matter. Mr Deakin reoeived a oable from Mr Lyttelton, giving the new regulations in the Marshall Islands. Commercial firms established there pay a trading tax of 6000 marks annually. This will be the only tax on oommeroo. The Imperial Commissioner at Paivit has been instructed to assist merchants to conclude leases of land from the natives for trading stations. A tax of 2000 marks yearly will be imposed on ships engaged in trade on behalf of commercial firms not established in the islands. The Caroline Islands are to be thrown open on October Ist, the dues to be those according to the ordinance of Bta August, 1904.
