HOSPITAL SOCIAL.
A MOST SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION There was a large and representative attendance at the New Zealand Shipping
Company’s buildings'on the Waikaoae last evening, on the occasion of tbo annual social, given in connection with fho Gisborne Hospital. Elaborate preparations bad been made for the gathering, which was one of the most successful on reoord. The decorations of the main building were carried out much on the same lines as last year. There was an adequate display of bunting overhead, and a very pleasing array of foliage around the ballroom. Gonspioioua in the decorations was a wealth of New Zealand ferns, which were most artistically arranged, and was greatly admired by all present. Thanks are due, on this occasion, to Mr H. Withers, who had the supervision of the decorations, and for the success of which he was chiefly res* ponsibl9. The supper-room committee had a very hard programme to fulfil, but needless to say they came through it with flying colors. The gentlemen chiefly responsible for this were the following, and needless to
say they cna and all did their work well: Messrs J. Colley, B. N. Jones, Dewing, Edwards, Harding, Hawley, Johnson Kennedy, Miller, Pool, Poswillo, Sherratt, Byrnes, Wallis, 0, Lewis, M. Craig, Simpson, Humphries and Skillicorn, These was an abundant supply of edibles and the ladies in charge of the tables were unremitting in their efforts to satisfy the wants of the visitors. The tables were very prettily set out with white flowers, daffodils and daisies predominating, the pretty palms interspersed at intervals adding greatly to the general effect. Where so many ladies so willingly assisted towards the success of the social we refrain from giving names in oase any should be omitted. Although there was a fairly large floor committee the bulk of the work fell upon the shoulders of Mr W. Webb, who was ably assisted by the following gentlemen : Messrs Bright, Bendall, Colebourne, Edwards, H. Zachariab, Webb, A. Zaohariah, W. Barker, V. Barker, P. Barker. The music committee wa3 composed of Messrs Foster, C. Adair, J. Chrisp, Don, Massey, Morrison, Humphreys, Sidebottom MoKillop, and Cooper. A speoiai word of praise is due to Mr W. Barker for the services of bis motor ' car, which assisted greatly towards seaur-
ing a good floor. Thß arrangements made by the refreshment committee were all that could be desired, and reflect great credit upon Mr J. A. Harding, who was held responsible for this department. The refreshment committee comprised the following: Messrs Barry, Common, Eliott, Harding, Kennedy, Lucas, Murray, Matthewson, Sawyer, Francis, Sheridan, Anderson, H. Martin, E. P. Joyoe, Oman, Bourke, F. Harris, J. Martin and Lomas. To the secretaries—Messrs T. G. Lawless and J. E. Little—in due the utmoot praise, for they were both most assiduous in their efforts to promote the success of th 9 social, and they left no stone unturned towards thafc end. Ife must have been a matter of great satisfaction to see that, despite the unfortunate state of the elements, the social turned out such o success. Reference should also be made to the services rendered by Mr Hallamore, manager of the New Zealand Shipping Company, that gentleman being most assiduous in his efforts to please all present. The shipping company went to considerable expense in the matter of making all pro-
parations for the ball as complete as possible, and the enterprise which they displayed was much appreciated. An excellent musical programme was provided, and in addition to the Gisborne City Band, the services of Miss Moore’s string quintette was also obtained, and gave the utmost satisfaction. Dancing commenced at 8.15, and was continued with spirit throughout the evening. The arrangements made for lighting the building were excellent, and reflected great credit on the Gisborne Gas Company, and especially Mr Lunn, who devoted the greater part of the day in completing the work. This evening a social will bo held for children, and there should be a crowded, attendance. Danoing will commence at 7.30 sharp, The dance music will be supplied by the Rifles Band.
