HAWKE’S BAY v. POVERTY BAY.

WIN FOR THE LOCAL TEAM.

The Hawko’a Bay representatives played tho first match of their tour agamst Poverty Bay yesterday morning at the Victoria Domain. Notwithstanding the early hour, and the threatening aspect of the weather, there was a good attendt\nce of spectators, the stand being well patronised. A slight drizzle set in at the beginning, which steadily increased as the game progressed. Mr B. G. Hallatnore controlled the game and Messrs Bees Jones and J. Poynton oarried the line flags. The visitors played in black and white and the local men in black. The teams took the field as follows : Hawke's Bay—Starkey, Lewis, D. McCarthy, Bussell, Pohio, Ward, Payne, Mahoney, Cox, Bush, Rockell, Carlson, Caldwell, McKnight, Mitchell. Poverty Bay—Tate, Nolud, Hay, Robinson, Kelly, Brown, Bongo, Skoet, Allen, Walker, Thomson, Tier, Martin, Sharp, Parkec-Turei, Gisborne were favored with the spin of thfi coin, aDd Bobinson decided to kick against (fie rain, his judgment goiDg a long way towards the result of the game. Napier attacked fiercely from the kick-off and tho home team was in difficulties from the start. Tho visiting forwards were much heavier than their opponents and

tbeir serum work was a treat to ooe, Payne secured from a scrum, and came through to Brown, the visiting forwards carrying tbo ball dangerously noar the locals’ lino. Hay kickod cloar, but Pohio gathering tbe ball at full spaed raced for the corner, Kolly just managing to got across. Tbe local backs wore handling tbo wet baij indifferently, but their tackling was sound, Brown and Bobinsoc doing yoornan service in this detriment. Payne made another opening, transferring to Bussoli, to McCarthy, to Pohio,, McCarthy, who was thrown out by lielly and Hay. Having tho advantage in the pack, Ward had tho boll brought into play from the line by tbo scrums instead of throwing it iD. Another fine pieco of passing almost lot Lewis in an .tho other wing. Ward was not playing up 4,3 his usual form, but Payne, Bussell und handled the greasy ball with precision, and gape a nice display. Brown was instrumental jp changing the sceno of play. After a characteristic dash ho gave Robinson an nooning, .and.the latter was only ovoi hauled twenty yards from tho Napier line. Rmscll shifted play back to gentre with a judicious punt. Cyril Sharp broko awny witli tho ball at bis toes, but Ward with a fine kick shifted play to nou.tral ground. Martin was tho next to come into prominence, carrying the bali by brilliant footwork L-intit cn to tbo Napier Imo, where Ekeet missed scoring an easy try. Carlston headed ihe visitors in a forward rush that shifted tbo sceno of play to the other end of tho ground. The visitors made determined efforts to score, and Robinson and Brown were sorely pressod on several ccasiorts, being ropeotedly cheered for Ivir sterling defensive work. Robinson secured at his own 25 yards chalk line, and passed to Brown, who mulled, and Mahony gaining possession ran right to the full back, giving tbo ball to Rush, who scored. No goal resulted. Hawke’s J3ay .„ 3 Gisborne ... ... r: 0 Tior, Martin, Walker, and Parker Tupi were conspicuous in nieo foot work, carrying play to centre. Sharp took a hand with tho backs in the passing ruD, but McCarthy and Ward brought play back, and a splendid forward foot rush was only stopped by Brown under the poets. Over-

eagornoss by tho lcoul winger gave Starkoy a 1 easy chance ti place a goal, hut tho that wont wide. Half time vvao then ■ umdod. Too second spoil was opened in etoady rain and a good brocza behind tho locals, who lost no time in gotfing to work. Ufa tin wont right through tho visitors with the ball at his toos. Starkey saving in tho nick of time. Cos, MoKnight, and Rockwdlearriod tho bull back tu tho centre. Kongo scoured from tho lino out, and gave Robinson tho leather, who gavo it to Hay, tho latter sending it on immediately to Nolan. The Ivaiti-Oity man jiukou back into tho ruok, boating Lewis, Russel , and McCarthy ciovorly, and made a dash for tho line. Starkey grassod his man n fe>v feet from the goal lino, and tho two rolled over tho lino togethor oloso to tho posts. Tsto kickod tho ball uudor tho goal bar, bringing tho scoios Javel. Shortly afterwards l’ayne scoured from a sot uni, passing to Ward, to llussoll, to McCarthy, to Lewis, the latter failing to hold tho ball. Mahoney carried the ball up'to tho Poverty Bay lino on his toos. A few yards from the covoted chalk lino “O picked up and mado a dash for tho jino, hut mot a delormiued dofeuon. iioliy brought temporary relief, but Ward was almost ovor next minute, a faulty pass spoiling a oertain sooro. Robinson intercept, d and roood through tho visitors. Coming to tho full back fits looked vainly around for soma ono to take tho pass, hut found for tho nouco that ho was playing tho Hawke's team himself. Ho puutod high, and a groat raco onsuod botwoon Alien and Ward, tho latter kicking tho ball dead. (Shortly afterwards Rougo shot tho leather out to Robinson, who boat Ward, Russoll and McCarthy brilliantly, and coming down to Lowis, tho tbroo-quartor, ho sent tho louthor on to Hay. With only tho full back to ohallongo them, Hay and Nolan raced for tho lino. On reaching tho full back Hay handed tho ball to Nolao, and tho latter ran in unopposed and registered his second try between tho posts. Robinson addod tho extra points-

Of the local men the forwards playeci splendidly, Parkcr-Turoi and Martin being the pic-k, Walker, Sharp and Thomson not far behind. J. Skcet (wing-forward) nor Kongo Kongo (half) played up to their club form. Tho ntve-eighths were undoubtedly the bulwarks of the back division, and both Brown and Robinson were seen at their best. They did not play into each other's hands' in attacking, but in defence work they* left nothing to be desired. The only time Hawke's Bay crossed the line was when! those two were ‘attacking. Mahoney shot in between the two, and tho‘other htaeks made a very sorry attempt to save the .score. Hlay played up. better in the second spell, and got) in some nice work. Kelly and Nolan could have been fed more with advantage. Both thoroughly justified their inclusion and were good in all departments. Tate was not as safe as usual at full back.

SATURDAY'S MATCHES.
