BUTTER TRADE.

IMPORTANT CONFERENCE.

Bjr lelegrap.il. Press Ass'n, Copyright Beoeived 9.42 p.m., Aug. 3. Sydney, Aug. 3. At a conference of co-operative butter companies the report of Mr Morrison, who recently visited London on behalf of cooperators to investigate the butter trade conditions, states : “ As regards establishing a co-operative store in London I cannot recommend for the present to disturb the selling arrangements now existing.” Comparing the best New South Wales butter with Victorian and New Zealand he waß satisfied that the quality and get up was in New South Wales* favor. It was only prejudice that enabled others to realise more. After inquiring at the best butter houses in London be was convinced that grading by the Government was abeolutely of no value. Buyers were not influenced in favor of butter bearing the Government stamp. Every man buys on his own judgment. A cable haß been received, expecting new season’s butter to open at 110 s to | 112 s. . . . The question of providing a substitute for New Zealand pine for butter boxes was raised.. New Zealand pine was becoming dearer, and it was only a matter of time until the supply for butter purposes would be cut off altogether. Trialß with Queensland and local pines were not a success. A committee was appointed to deal with the matter. Before a select committee to inquire into the dairy produce trade, Mr Holmes, Wellington, was examined. He stroDgly supported the New Zealand systom, which protected the careful producer and corrected the careless one, thus giving confidence to purchasers in England.
