Christchurch, last night. At the Supreme Court to-day 'William Power, on .elderly mao, convicted of having carnally known a girl between 10 and 12 yearß o! age, was sentenood lo five years imprisonment. Leonard Sheard was acquitted of having indecently assaulted a little girl in Haglay Park on the evening of jgaao 10th. An alibi was established by the defence, John Collins was sentenced to eighteen mootbe, and Thomas Williams to nine months cor breaking and entering a grocer’s shop, and stealing a quantity of tobacco, oigarottes and groceries, Louie Davis vras sentenced to nine nanat-ja’ imtprisonmont for forging a obeque for £35. Somes Pringle Amos and George Moir i Crockett pleaded guilty to having wilfully ■set fire to a building in Manchester street* An application was made that accused -should bo recommended for the clemency -of the Crown, and alter discussion Mr .Justice Denniston ordered that the cases should stand over till tbe next cession in ■order that he might take 4he opinion pf Other judges as to whether tbe English, giactiee existed in Now Zealand.
